Current functions of the centers and services


  • Conduct research on wildlife biology and ecology, conservation science, social science, policies, climate change impacts, and protected area management.
  • Provide training on biodiversity assessment and monitoring, conservation planning, protected area management, wildlife habitat management, wildlife health, and disease.
  • Conduct human-wildlife interaction and mitigation studies.
  • Conduct genetic/eDNA research for species conservation.
  • Conduct research on Invasive Alien Species (IAS).
  • Conduct National Capital Accounting and Ecosystem Services Valuation research.
  • Process and provide research clearance services.
  • Maintain the Entomological, National Digital and Natural History Museum, and Zoological Museum.
  • Conduct specimen curation, taxidermy, and other museum services.
  • Co-supervise BSc, MSc. and PhD students in conservation science.

  • Conduct research on forestry policy, forest resource and ecosystem dynamics, Community Forest (CF) and Private Forest (PF), forest management, Non-Wood Forest Produce (NWFP), dendrochronology, forest pests and diseases, climate change impacts, forest biometrics, and wood anatomy.
  • Provide training on CF and PF management, sustainable timber management and utilization, NWFP management and utilization, forestry resource assessment, forest-based enterprises, and wood technology.
  • Develop and disseminate forest science technologies.
  • Conduct domestication research trials of high-value forest produce.
  • Provide scientific advice to the Management Authority as per the Forest and Nature Conservation Act (FNCA), as per the requirements of the CITES.
  • Co-supervise BSc., MSc. and PhD students in forestry science.
  • Maintain herbaria, ethnobotany museum, biomass, and dendrochronology laboratory.

  • Schedule and make operational plans for the Professional Certificate/National Certificate program.
  • Offer thematic professional training at the institute.
  • Organise and coordinate research seminars and conferences on national, regional, and international issues related to forestry and environmental science.
  • Coordinate international, regional, and national education and research exchange programs.
  • Coordinate BSc, MSc, PhD and internship programs in forestry and conservation science.
  • Provide library services.
  • Provide GIS laboratory services

  • Manage Human Resources (HR) with regard to benefits, entitlements, leave, promotion, recruitment, retirement, and disciplinary actions.
  • Forecast HR requirements and projections.
  • Procure goods and services.
  • Manage the institute's facilities and properties.
  • Manage the institute's current and capital budget.
  • Make payments as per the financial norms and standards.
  • Forecast and propose annual and five-year budget of the institute.
  • Manage and provide institute transport services.
