Sangay Wangchuk (Forest Ranger II)

Forest Ranger at the Centre for Forests Science and Technology, Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Forestry Research and Training, is an ardent forest ecologist and plant taxonomist specialising in the plant families Balsaminaceae, Lauraceae, Rosaceae, and Ericaceae of Bhutan. I am a certified angler, photographer, and UAV operator. I have over ten years of experience in a range of areas, including protected area management, environmental education and nature recreation, biodiversity surveys, and the inventory of angiosperms, as well as garden and arboretum management.

I have been teaching botany and plant taxonomy to professional forester trainees at Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Forestry Research and Training since 2022, while actively involved in ecosystem services valuation, climate risk assessment for the Vanishing Treasures Project landscape, and climate vulnerability assessment of community forests and non-wood forest management groups in Bhutan.

I have authored 7 scientific publications reporting new species and generic records of plants in Bhutan, highlighting the country’s botanical wealth and research opportunities. My recent work includes a review of the non-detrimental findings of Nardostachys jatamansi in Bhutan and domestication trial of the critically endangered Nardostachys jatamansi and distillation of Jatamansi essential oil to complement the future NDF’s.
