JSWOESA Winners - 2015
In commemoration of the 60th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, three environmental stewards were honoured on the 8th of October 2015 during the first Bhutan Bird Festival at Tingtibi Zhemgang for their contribution to environment conservation in Bhutan.
Mr. Tshering Penjore, Principal Research Officer at Renewable Natural Research Center at Mongar has helped fabricate and construct low cost and effective electric fencing thereby helping contain and prevent crop loss. This has helped reduce human-wildlife conflicts significantly over many parts of Bhutan. He has also pioneered a low cost drip irrigation system for farmers which can be turned on and off using mobile phone internet helping improve livelihoods and ensuring the conservation of water.
Dr. D. B. Gurung, Dean of the College of Natural Resources under the Royal University of Bhutan is an avid naturalist and author of the Orchids of Bhutan. His pioneering work documenting the fishes and aquatic diversity of Bhutan has lead to a publication on the first checklist for fishes in Bhutan. He has been a mentor to innumerable number of students thereby helping raise the next generation of environmental stewards.
Mr. Sherub, popularly known as Bird Sherub is synonymous with birds. He is working as the Chief of Research and Education at the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment. With an avid passion for birds, he has tirelessly worked to document and record the incredible diversity of birds in Bhutan. From recording their sounds to noting their behaviors, Sherub is the penultimate naturalist in Bhutan today. He is the reference and the guide when it comes to birds.
