The management of Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Forestry Research and Training (UWIFoRT) proudly joins the nation in celebrating the Birthday of His Majesty the King today. To commemorate this auspicious occasion, UWIFoRT, under the Department of Forests and Park Services (DoFPS), is pleased to launch the following significant documents:

· National Framework for Agarwood Production and Marketing in Bhutan

· Non-Detriment Findings of Aquilaria malaccensis in Bhutan

· From Soil to Fragrance: Empowering Bhutanese Farmers Through Agarwood Production: A Comprehensive Business Plan

· Agarwood Technical Brief

Agarwood, a highly valued resinous wood, is derived from infected Aquilaria trees. In Bhutan, the species Aquilaria malaccensis is cultivated in the southern regions, presenting a promising market opportunity. Recognizing its potential, the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Forestry Research and Training (UWIFoRT), with guidance and support from His Excellency the Minister of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MoENR), the Chamberlain, the Queen’s Project Office, and the Director of DoFPS, has compiled comprehensive documentation on agarwood cultivation, establishment, and marketing in Bhutan.

These publications will serve as essential resources for agarwood growers, guiding them in cultivating high-quality agarwood and fostering a structured approach to the agarwood industry. Although artificial inoculation of agarwood trees remains in the trial phase, research conducted by the UWIFoRT team under DoFPS has shown promising results. These documents are expected to significantly benefit the farmers. The ultimate goal is to establish a robust agarwood industry that enhances both local livelihoods and Bhutan’s long-term economic growth. Through dedicated efforts and scientific advancements, Bhutan is poised to become a key player in the global agarwood market, ensuring sustainable cultivation and production for future generations.

Additionally, UWIFoRT is also launching documents on NDF of Nardostachys jatamansi and Three Decades of Community Forestry in Bhutan—focused on resource conservation and sustainable utilization and reinforcing Bhutan’s commitment to environmental sustainability. To complete the celebration, 15th batch Forester Trainees who are in Gelephu presently taking up “Nursery and Plantation” module planted over 350 Agar seedlings. We wish His Majesty happy returns of the day and pray for unabated success and longevity.
