10th World Dendro Conference

The Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environmental Research in collaboration with the Tree Ring Laboratory, Columbia University and Department of Geography, University of Cambridge is organizing the 10th World Dendro Conference at the conference hall of the Royal University of Bhutan, in Thimphu: Bhutan from today till June 15, 2018. The opening ceremony of the conference was graced by His Excellency Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji, Minister for Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.

The 10th World Dendro Conference is organized with the objective to:

  • Provide a platform for tree ring researchers and scientists to share latest research findings and to build stronger research network;
  • Include multiple forums in which students and educators of natural science from Bhutan can participate; and
  • Multiple venue open to general public where interested global citizens can learn about the latest environmental discoveries.

During the opening of the conference, some publications of the institute was also launched:

  • Historically significant trees of Bhutan: it is an effort to document historically significant trees of Bhutan and to relate the stories with the age of the tree
  • Status report: Status report of the institute from January 2016 to December 2017 was also launched
  • TEEB report and Policy brief: Technical report as well as policy brief of The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) study was launched. This study attempts to relate up-stream land use changes with the hydropower generation. 

The conference shall witness 110 oral presentations, 55 poster presentations within 12 themes together with 6 plenaries. About 162 international participants from 35 countries are participating for the conference together with about 50 Bhutanese researchers and students. This is the first Dendro conference ever organized by a developing country and the 9th Dendro conference was held in Melbourne, Australia in 2014.
