Training on Forest Silviculture

Announcements | Posted on 2019-04-01

The UWICER will be conducting a week-long course on ‘Forest Silviculture’ at the UWICER campus from 16th April 2019.  The nomination for the training will be done by the head of the office of the respective divisions and parks.

The silvicultural practices manipulate forest vegetation to fulfill various objectives such as sustaining wildlife habitat, maintaining hydrological processes, restoring ecosystems, conserving biodiversity, and producing wood products. It controls the establishment, growth, composition, health and quality of both natural and manmade forests to meet diverse needs and values. Thus, this training is intended for the field professional foresters working under the Department of Forests and Park Services to enable them to design, implement, monitor and evaluate silvicultural practices to enhance the productivity, resilience and value of natural forests for long term sustainability.

Towards the end of the week-long training, the participants are expected to better equip with specific silvicultural knowledge and skills required for sustainable forest management by reviewing the underlying physiological and ecological principles and explaining how these are applied in controlling the composition, growth and regeneration of natural forests. The training is further expected to improve the management and sustainable utilization of forest resources that are outside the purview of forest management units (FMU).
