Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Forestry Research and Training Celebrates Social Forestry Day and the Coronation of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo
The Ugyen Wangchuck
Institute for Forestry Research and Training (UWIFRT) proudly celebrated Social Forestry Day today on 2nd June, 2025, coinciding with
the Coronation Day
of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck,
who initiated Bhutan’s Social
Forestry Program in 1979 with the theme " A tribute to His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo's
Legacy of Conservation and Environmental Stewardship". This visionary
program empowered communities to plant trees, sustainably manage forest
resources, and take active ownership of Bhutan’s rich natural heritage.
To honour this legacy, UWIFoRT organised a tree-planting drive across its campus, planting native species such
as Oak (Quercus
spp.), Prinsepia (Prinsepia utilis), and Chaenomeles (Chaenomeles speciosa).
The event was graced by the participation of the Head, faculty, staff, and forester
trainees, reinforcing the institute’s commitment to
environmental stewardship and sustainable forestry practices.
The Social Forestry Program,
introduced by the Fourth
Druk Gyalpo, has been instrumental in fostering community-led
conservation efforts, ensuring that Bhutan remains a global leader in
environmental sustainability. Today’s celebration not only commemorates His
Majesty’s enduring vision but also inspires future generations to continue
protecting and nurturing Bhutan’s forests.
The institute remains
committed to advancing forestry research, education, and outreach, ensuring
that Bhutan’s natural heritage thrives for generations to come.
