The Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Forestry Research and Training (UWIFoRT) successfully hosted a week-long Plant Taxonomic Training program, starting today on World Environment Day (5th June 2023). The training program saw the participation of 21 forestry officials from various field offices of the Department of Forests and Park Services and aimed to enhance their knowledge and skills in plant taxonomy.

Plant taxonomy plays a crucial role in the field of forestry as it involves the identification, classification, and naming of plants.  With the increasing challenges faced by forestry professionals in accurately identifying plant species, the UWIFoRT recognized the need for specialized training in this area. The Plant Taxonomic Training program was specifically designed to meet this requirement and equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of plant taxonomy principles and techniques.

The training program will incorporate both theoretical and practical sessions, ensuring participants gain hands-on experience in plant identification and taxonomy, including plant classification systems, field identification techniques, specimen collection and preservation, and the use of taxonomic keys and guides.  The training program will be providing an immersive hands-on learning experience for the participants in different forest types.

Dr. Kaka Tshering, the Head Specialist of UWIFoRT, expressed his enthusiasm for the training program, stating, "We are delighted to host this Plant Taxonomic Training at our institute. By enhancing the taxonomic knowledge and skills of forestry officials, we aim to contribute to their professional development and strengthen their capacity to effectively manage and conserve our precious forest resources.”

The Plant Taxonomic Training program at the UWIFoRT is another step forward in the institute's commitment to fostering excellence in forestry education and research. By equipping forestry professionals with specialized skills, the institute strives to enhance the overall capacity and efficiency of the forestry sector in the country.  The training is a series of training under the competency-based framework financially supported by the Royal Civil Service Commission.
