Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Training underway in Gelephu
The Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Training is currently underway in Gelephu. The training is scheduled from
21st to
26th of April,2025. This training aims to enhance foresters'
capacity in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation by improving their proficiency
in rescue protocols and equipment usage. The initiative seeks to mitigate
human-wildlife conflict (HWC), protect wildlife populations, and contribute to
long-term biodiversity conservation by equipping participants with these
critical skills.
One of the key components of the training is focused
on snake handling and conservation, with both theoretical knowledge and
practical techniques. The program combines classroom sessions with hands-on
exercises, including snake handling, projectile shooting, and dose calculation.
Participants include 26 forest officials (1 female and
25 male) from 24 Division Forest Offices and Protected Areas under the
Department of Forests & Park Services (DoFPS). The training is supported by
IKI and WWF Bhutan.
Training Objectives:
- Train foresters in safe wildlife capture,
handling, and transport methods for injured or displaced animals.
- Equip foresters with skills to respond to
wildlife emergencies caused by natural disasters, poaching, habitat
destruction, or human-wildlife conflict.
- Promote use of appropriate tools and
techniques to minimize stress and risks for both the animals and the rescuers.
- Provide skills on snake handling and basic
snake conservation knowledge.
